Suspected Shabaab militants killed five people in Witu near Lamu; six more were also reportedly killed in neighboring villages. A massacre in nearby Mpeketoni last week is being blamed on a major "security collapse," as authorities had been warned of an impending attack. A Nairobi judge rejected the prosecution's attempt to cancel bail for Ahmed Dugal, a suspected accomplice in a Shabaab car bombing on April 23. Authorities arrested 17 suspects, including a woman, over rumors of a Shabaab attack in Naivasha. Police are investigating leaflets that threatened Shabaab attacks on the Masii police station, the Ithanga chief camp, and Muumoni and Ithanga villages.
