The army announced that President Morsi is no longer president and that the country's constitution has been temporarily suspended. The head of the Constitutional Court has been appointed interim head of state. President Morsi had earlier proposed the creation of a "consensus government" in a bid to quell ongoing protests against his government. The army took over the studios of State TV in Cairo, while opposition members including Mohammed el Baradei met with military officials. A senior Muslim Brotherhood official denounced events in Egypt as a "military coup." Travel bans were reportedly placed on a number of leading Brotherhood figures including President Morsi. Authorities are closely monitoring the activities of jihadist groups in the el Arish area.
