A French soldier was killed by an explosive device during a search for arms caches in the Ifoghas mountains. He is the fifth French soldier killed in the French-led military intervention in northern Mali that began in January. Dozens of al Qaeda-linked fighters have been killed in the intervention and others have fled to hideouts in the remote region. France said its operation was in the "final, most delicate stage."
