The government extended the state of emergency until March 2, after attacks on police by armed groups, the breakup of an al Qaeda cell, violent labor protests by security forces, and the desecration of Sufi shrines and a Jewish cemetery. The judiciary protested the delay in establishing its independence from the executive and legislative branches.
