A Malian army colonel said weapons seized in Gao indicate that Islamist forces in the north have the "capacity of an army" although they lack airpower. Signs have emerged of increasing cooperation among Islamist groups in the region, including Nigeria's Ansaru and Boko Haram, which may be using Chad as a rear base.
