Yemeni security forces killed four al Qaeda operatives involved with the suicide attack in Mareb on July 2 that killed eight Spanish tourists. One soldier was killed in the operation. One of the operatives killed escaped from a Yemeni jail in 2006.

“Scores of al Qaeda suspects” have been arrested in Sana’a, Abin, and Aden, following the suicide attack that killed 10 at the temple of the Queen of Sheba in Marib province. Security has been increased at government buildings, embassies, and for government officials in wake of the attack.

A suicide car bomber killed nine and wounded seven in an attack at an ancient temple in a north province of Mareb. Seven Spanish tourists were killed. Police had warnings of a possible al Qaeda attack one month ago.

Jaber A. Elbaneh, one of the Lackawanna Six who escaped from a Yemeni jail, has turned himself in according to Yemeni authorities. The FBI does not have confirmation. Elbaneh was one of 23 al Qaeda that escaped last summer.

Arsonists doused a mosque with gasoline while it was filled and set it ablaze, critically injuring 8 and burning another 22. Yemen’s civil war between the Houthis and the government has escalated, with fierce fighting outside of Sa’ada reported.

The Yemeni government continues to support local Salafist groups and al Qaeda’s global organization, as well as encourage and train jihadis to fight in Iraq. Yemenis are one of the largest foreign contingents in Iraq, and many are trained by the Yemeni military.

The Yemeni government has “stayed clear of becoming involved in the case in which the US government accused Sheik Abdumajeed Al-Zindani” of supporting al Qaeda. Zindani was ejected from the Islah party last month. Twelve soldiers were killed in fighting with Shia rebels

Yemen has released over 100 Islamist “militants,” including 19 who fought alongside the deceased al Qaeda in Iraq leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. Thirty-five al Qaeda have been charged with the September 2006 dual suicide attack on Yemen’s oil facilities.
