Eight people including a child were injured in Lahj when police opened fire and used tear gas on southern protesters demanding an end to the trials of three opposition party leaders and the release of hundreds detained after prior protests.
A Yemeni court imposed a ban at the trial of three senior Socialist party leaders charged with undermining state security by organizing demonstrations. Security forces killed dozens of citizens during a year-long series of protests. The charges against Hassan Baoum, Yahya al Shouaibi, and Ali al Gharib carry the death penalty.
The war in Yemen is expanding beyond the northern Sa’ada governorate as bombings are audible for the first time in Sana’a, the nation’s capital.

Yemeni authorities have detained 11 al Qaeda operatives in the capital who were suspected of planning terrorist acts. Those arrested include African nationals and Saudis. The group members were detained before they could continue their travels to Iraq.
FBI Most Wanted Jaber Elbaneh was jailed after losing his appeal. Evidence against the Yemeni-American in the 2006 pre-election attack on oil facilities was weak, Interior Minister Rashad al Alimi said in defending Elbaneh’s prior release on bail after he surrendered to President Saleh.
The northern Sa’ada war expanded to Amran and al Jawf provinces killing 50. A Qatari mediation team is unable to implement an agreement that calls for both the rebels and military to disengage. Heavy military bombardment in Sa’ada has severely curtailed civilians’ ability to procure food and water.
