Yemen’s appeal court reduced Jaber Elbanah’s 10-year jail term to five years. Elbanah is wanted by the US for providing material support to Al Qaeda and is believed to have helped recruit the Lackawanna Six. A Yemeni court released Elbanah on bail in February 2008.

The six-man team that attacked the US Embassy on Sept. 17 has links to al Qaeda; three of the men fought in Iraq. Many of the more than 1,200 terrorists charged in Saudi Arabia are from Yemen.

Yemeni security forces arrested Abu al Ghaith al Yamani, the leader of the Yemeni Islamic Jihad, and five other members of the group for plotting attacks against foreign embassies. The British Embassy in Sana’a has been closed. The toll in last week’s attack on the US Embassy has risen to 18 dead.

Outside the embassy, 16 Yemenis were killed in the attacks, which involved bombs, snipers, RPGs, and small-arms fire. Al Qaeda in Yemen threatened to avenge the death of five of its operatives during clashes with security forces in Tarim. The US Embassy in Sana™a has allowed its nonessential staff to return, citing an improved security situation.
