A Saudi member of al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula surrendered to Yemeni authorities. Naif Duhais Yahya al Harbi has provided “important information that will lead to the arrest of a number of dangerous members of the organisation,” according to the interior ministry.

Security services arrested Hassan Hussein Bin Alwan, a Saudi Arabian national who served as al Qaeda senior financier in Yemen. Alwan was detained in Marib province and charged with forming a terror group.

Yemeni prosecutors are demanding the death penalty for 11 Yemenis, four Syrians, and a Saudi currently on trial for carrying out 13 strikes against oil facilities, foreign tourists, and government institutions over the past two years. The verdict is expected on July 13.

Ali Salem al Bedh, the former vice president of Yemen, accused Naser Abdel Karim al Wahishi, the leader of al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, of working with President Saleh’s internal security apparatus. On May 21, al Bedh assumed leadership of the Southern Mobility movement and called for South Yemen to secede.

Nasser al Wahishi, the leader of al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, declared support for the rebels in southern Yemen. “We in the al Qaeda network support what you are doing: your rejection of oppression practised against you and others, your fight against the government and your defending yourself,” Wahishi said in a propaganda tape.

A suicide bomber killed himself in a failed attempt to attack a team of South Koreans sent to investigate the March 16 suicide attack that killed four of their countrymen. The bomber detonated as he was waiting for the convoy on a road outside Sanaa.

A Yemeni security official said the suicide bomber behind the March 16 attack that killed four South Korean tourists was trained in Somalia. Abdel Rahman Mehdi al Aajbari left his home in Yemen two months ago and wrote a letter to his family telling them they would never see him again.

The interior minister blamed al Qaeda in Yemen for the roadside bomb attack in Hadramot province that killed four South Korean tourists and wounded three others. Security forces detained 12 Islamists suspected of being connected to the attack.

Four tourists were killed and three more were wounded in a powerful blast in the city of Al Shibam. The four tourists killed were South Koreans, while the nationality of those wounded is unknown.
