Othman al Awlaki, a cousin of Anwar, was also sentenced in absentia to eight years prison, while Hisham Mohammed Assem, the killer, was sentenced to death.
The governor of Dhale province escaped an assassination attempt; the attack was thought to have been launched by southern separatists. The ruling and opposition parties agreed to delay parliamentary elections.
None of the 47 al Qaeda operatives are in Saudi Arabia. Twenty-seven of them are thought to be in Pakistan and Afghanistan, 16 are thought to be in Yemen, and four more are believed to be in Iraq.
