The Yemeni air force killed 30 of its own soldiers in a strike outside of Zinjibar. The soldiers were from the 119th Brigade, which is said to support forces opposing President Saleh’s regime.

Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula fighters killed three Yemeni soldiers in the contested city of Zinjibar. A Yemeni official claimed the government provided key intelligence that led to the deaths of Anwar al Awlaki and Samir Khan.

Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula fighters executed a man in public and chopped off the hand of another in Ja’ar. The military killed 15 AQAP fighters in Zinjibar.

Tribesmen shot down a Russian-made Sukhoi fighter from the Yemeni air force in the Naham area outside of Sana’a. The government accused the Joint Meeting Parties of blowing up a pipeline in Marib.

A suicide bomber driving a car packed with explosives targeted the convoy of Yemen’s defense minister in Aden. Ten soldiers were wounded in the blast; the minister was not hurt.

Anti-government tribes took control of a Republican Guard base north of Sana’a. A general and several soldiers were killed, and tanks and other weapons were also seized.

Government forces killed 17 people in an assault on a protest camp on the outskirts of the capital of Sana’a. Protesters said elements of the Republican Guard and Central Security forces were responsible for the attack.

President Saleh returned to Yemen after convalescing in Saudi Arabia for three months. The US State Department urged Saleh to step down.

Nine people have been killed in mortar fire and sniper attacks in the capital of Sana’a. Fighting broke out between government forces and “unknown militants” in Al Houta, the provincial capital of Lahj.

Four al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula fighters were killed in airstrikes in Abyan. Fighting continues in Sana’a despite a truce. Mediation by the Gulf Cooperation Council has failed.
