Turkish warplanes attacked more than 70 Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) targets in northern Iraq. At least seven Turkish attack planes struck camps in the Avasin-Basyan and Hakurk regions just over the Turkish border.

Four al Qaeda operatives and one policeman were killed during raids on al Qaeda hideouts in Gaziantep and Kahramanmaras provinces. Nineteen al Qaeda suspects were arrested. Four police were also wounded. Police raided 18 locations and found 13 guns, ammunition, more than 100 kilograms of chemicals used in making bombs, and propaganda.

The Turkish military said it attacked 60 PKK targets from the air last week. The targets include 15 training camps, 12 logistic support camps, 18 shelters, five command sites, two communication centers, and weapon and food storage areas.

Five civilians, including two students, were killed and 58 wounded in bomb blast targeting a military vehicle. The attack occurred in the city of Diyarbakir in the Kurdish southeast of the country.

Turkish security forces captured 19 al Qaeda operatives planning attacks in the major cities. The military is using Israeli-made Heron UAVs with help of Israeli crews to hunt PKK terrorists, according to a report in a Turkish daily.

The Turkish military claims to have destroyed more than 200 PKK targets in the mountains of northern Iraq and killed hundreds of PKK fighters. A Kurdish official said the claims are inflated. A percussion bomb exploded in Istanbul; no one was injured.

Security forces stopped a suspected bomber with seven pounds of explosives in his backpack outside a subway station in Istanbul. Police later raided his safe house and found more explosives and bomb-making materials. Leaders from the US, Turkey, and Iraq discussed the PKK and the situation in northern Iraq via phone.

Turkish fighter-bombers attacked PKK positions in northern Iraq for the second time in three days. The attack, which lasted for over one hour, hit PKK positions in a mountainous area north of Irbil. The US ambassador to Iraq asked Turkey not to endanger Iraq’s stability.

Turkish fighter-bombers struck PKK positions inside Iraq. The nightime raid hit positions close to the border with Turkey and the Qandil mountain, which straddles the Iraq-Iran border. The PKK is headquartered in Qandil and runs training camps in the mountains.

Six PKK fighters and one Turkish army officer were killed during clashes in the mountainous Sirnak province in southeast Turkey. One soldier was killed and six wounded in an explosion in a military zone in the neighboring province of Hakkari.

President Abdullah Gul reiterated his country is prepared to strike PKK positions inside of Iraq. The Turkish military said it inflicted “significant losses” after an attack on a PKK base inside Iraq.

Four Turkish soldiers were killed and nine wounded in a PKK ambush. Turkish helicopters attacked Kurdish villages suspected of harboring PKK fighters. Turkey is deploying its special forces to the Iraq border.
