Three policemen and three “gunmen” were killed during a 15-minute shootout at the US consulate in Istanbul. “The terrorists were bearded men and had long hair,” one witness said. One of those killed had a Syrian passport, another committed suicide after being shot.

The Turkish military said an estimated 150 fighters from the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) were killed during airstrikes in the Qandil Mountains in northern Iraq over the past week. A PKK spokesman said that only six fighters were killed during the raid.

One Turkish soldier was killed and seven wounded in a series of clashes with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). Turkish warplanes also struck a group of PKK fighters as they attempted to cross the border from Iraq. Turkey will purchase 84 helicopters and an air defense system from the US.

The Turkish military operation inside Iraq is expected to last 15 days. Iraqi’s foreign minister claimed only several hundred Turkish troops have entered northern Iraq.

Turkey has launched artillery, air, and ground attacks against Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) targets in northern Iraq. More than 3,000 troops are involved in the operation. The US military said it is “aware” of a Turkish “operation of limited duration to specifically target PKK terrorists in that region.”
