Turkish aircraft attacked Kurdish rebels targets inside Iraq. The strike was in response to an earlier attack by Kurdish rebels that killed eight Turkish soldiers.

Turkish army forces clashed with rebel Kurds in southeast Turkey;18 rebels and 8 soldiers were killed. The rebels’ attack also wounded 16 soldiers.

Police arrested eight suspected al Qaeda members in raids in the western provinces of Bursa and Balikesir. The men are believed to have trained in al Qaeda camps and recruited other members. Bulent Yildirim, the president of the IHH, a humanitarian relief foundation, is being investigated on suspicion of providing financing for al Qaeda.

A suicide car bomb exploded at a police checkpoint, killing at least one policeman. Kurdish rebels, fighting for autonomy in southeastern Turkey, are suspected.

Turkey said Syria was allowing Kurdish rebels to set up bases on its territory. Turkish security forces foiled a Syrian plot to kidnap a Syrian rebel commander.
