Security forces continued their assault on the port city of Latakia. More than 35 Syrians have been killed since troops and navy gunboats attacked the city on Aug. 13.

Syria warships have shelled the port city of Latakia, where anti-regime protesters have held protests. Tanks and artillery have also been used. Nineteen people have been killed.

Anti-regime activists claimed that 59 people have been killed by Syrian security forces throughout the country. Saudi Arabia and Kuwait have recalled their ambassadors from Damascus.

US Secretary of State Clinton said President Assad has “lost legitimacy” and the US has “absolutely nothing invested in him … remaining in power.” Syria said Clinton’s statement was “provocative.”

Syrian security forces killed 15 anti-regime protesters and arrested more than 200 in the city of Hama. Syria accused the US of inciting violence after the ambassador visited Hama on Friday.
