Spain terror arrests put paragliding in spotlight with revelation suspects took lessons
A judge ruled that Eldar Magomedov (a.k.a. Ahmad Avar) and Muhammad Adamov can be detained unconditionally. Magomedov, a former member of the Russian special forces, had received terrorist training in Pakistan; Adamov was trained in Afghanistan. The pair allegedly plotted with al Qaeda facilitator Cengiz Yalcin to bomb targets in Gibraltar via remote-controlled aircraft.
Two Russian men of Chechen origin have been jailed for alleged links to an al Qaeda plot against European targets, and are described as “extremely dangerous.” A Turkish man said to be a key al Qaeda facilitator in the plot was identified as Cengiz Yalcin.
A Turkish man arrested at an apartment in Andalucia with explosives in his possession has been jailed, and two Chechen accomplices are being held pending further investigation. The Turk, who has been identified only as “CY,” is alleged to be an al Qaeda facilitator.
Spanish authorities announced the arrests of three suspected al Qaeda operatives who had allegedly amassed enough explosives to destroy a bus, or do even more damage.
Three members of an al Qaeda cell, including a Turkish man, were detained during raids in San Roque and Almuradiel. Explosives were seized during the raid in San Roque. The men had recently been seen paragliding in Gibraltar, and may have been planning an attack there.
The 2004 Madrid train bombings were not carried out by “lone actors” with no ties to al Qaeda’s international terrorist network, as an FBI commission recently claimed. The terrorists responsible had extensive ties to al Qaeda.

Police arrested “M.H.A.”, a key al Qaeda operative, in Valencia. “He was known in the heart of the terrorist organization as ‘al Qaeda’s librarian’,” the interior minister said. The suspect worked with al Qaeda affiliates AQAP and AQIM and also recruited and sent extremists to Afghanistan.

Police arrested a 24-year-old man suspected of belonging to al Qaeda. The man, who was not named, had 1,120 radical videos on the Internet, many which he produced. He managed jihadist websites that were used for indoctrination and recruitment.
