A US warship destroyed two boats of pirates attacking a Japanese ship inside Somali waters. Somalia’s prime minister resigned after months of fighting with the president. Four civilians were gunned down in Mogadishu.
Ethiopian and Somali forces are battling the al Qaeda linked Shabaab, formerly the Islamic Courts, in Mogadishu for the second day in a row. Protesters are rioting in Mogadishu, demanding the removal of Ethiopian troops. The mayor has warned civilians to flee the fighting.
Fifteen civilians were killed in Mogadishu after an IED targeted a military convoy missed and hit a bus. Two soldiers were killed in an IED attack in central Somalia. A district commissioner in Afgoye narrowly escaped an assassination attempt. Three Ugandan peacekeepers were wounded in a mortar attack.

Four explosions ripped through Mogadishu on Thursday night. Six were killed in fighting between Somali troops and Shabaab Islamist fighters. Eight were wounded in fighting between Puntland forces and local militias in Bossaso.
Over 20 people were killed as forces from the state of Somaliland invaded Puntland. Provincial administrations battled in the southern coastal town of Marka. A curfew has been imposed on the western town of Baidoa.
A suicide bomber killed three Ethiopian soldiers near a base in Baidoa where the Prime Minister was visiting. A prominent Muslim scholar was murdered in Kismayo. Five civilians were killed in bombings in Mogadishu and Kismayo.
Sheikh Mukhtar Robow Ali, aka Abu-Mansoor, the spokesman for al Shabaab, said “jihad is all we need.” The government signed a truce agreement the the Islamist-supporting Hawiye clan. Heavy fighting was reported in southern Mogadishu.

A district official for the Somali National Security Agency was killed and four civilians were wounded in separate attacks in Mogadishu.
One policeman was killed and two wounded in an Islamic Courts attack on a police base in Mogadishu. The Islamic Courts fired mortars at the presidential palace. Ethiopian troops deployed in Mogadishu’s Deglay district. The son of the Islamic Courts supporting Hawiye clan was murdered.
