A senior Somali military commander was killed in Baidoa. Burundi said it will send an additional 850 troops to Mogadishu. Pirates hijacked a Yemeni freighter traveling in the Gulf of Aden.

Police killed 15 Shabaab fighters in a failed attack on a government official’s home in Mogadishu on Friday. Fifteen people were killed and five were wounded in fighting in Mogadishu. Shabaab denied it was killing aid workers. Pirates released a Greek-owned tanker.

Eleven Shabaab fighters and 11 Ethiopian troops were killed in heavy fighting in Mogadishu. Kenya will deploy 800 peacekeepers while Nigera has delayed the deployment of 700 troops.

The US Treasury Department added three members of Shabaab to the Specially Designated Global Terrorist list. Ahmed Abdi Aw Mohammed (also known as Shaykh Mukhtar and Abu Zubeyr) the founder and leader of Shabaab; Issa Osman Issa, a military commander; and Mukhtar Robow, Shabaab’s spokesman were designated.

African Union peacekeepers from Burundi have begun to occupy a base recently vacated by Ethiopian forces; Shabaab immediately attacked the base. Three people have been killed during fighting in Mogadishu. Pirates seized a Saudi-owned oil supertanker off the coast of Kenya; the pirates are moving the ship to Eyl.

Islamic Courts fighters arrested and whipped 32 dancers just south of Mogadishu. Three Somalis were killed during fighting north of Mogadishu. Fighting between Islamic Courts members broke out again in Jowhar. Somalia’s president said the Transitional Federal Government has collapsed.

Two factions of the Islamic Courts “accidentally” battled in Jowhar; two were killed. Shabaab warned clans not to attack their forces in the port of Marka. Ethiopian forces withdrew from a refugee camp outside of Mogadishu. Pirates hijacked a Chinese fishing boat.

Shabaab will impose sharia in the recently captured port city of Merka. Islamic Courts warlord Yusuf “Indha Ade” Mohamed Siad refused an order by Shabaab to disarm. Islamic Courts fighters took control of a refugee camp south of Mogadishu.

Shabaab fighters seized the towns of Bulo Marer and Quryoley in southern Somalia, and are moving towards the port city of Merka. Pirates hijacked a Philippine tanker manned by a crew of 23. Two Shabaab fighters were killed after militiamen attacked their outpost in Eldher.

Thirteen people were killed and 35 were wounded during heavy fighting in Mogadishu on Sunday. Two nuns were kidnapped in Kenya and taken across the border into Somalia. A senior government official was shot and killed in Baidoa.

Fighting between Shabaab and Somali and Eithiopian troops north of Mogadishu killed 10 people. Hassan Dahir Aweys rejected the idea of talks to patch up rifts in the Islamic Courts. Pirates seized a Danish cargo ship with a crew of 13.
