Shabaab forces killed two Somali troops in an ambush in Dharkenlay. Twenty Shabaab fighters in Beledweyne surrendered to the government. The prime minister said Somali and African Union forces would eject Shabaab from Mogadishu within a year.

More than 35 Shabaab fighters, including a commander, Hassan Abdurrahman Gumarey, were killed in recent fighting in Dhobley. Twenty people were wounded in a bombing at a market in Hargeysa in Somaliland.

Twelve people were killed in fighting between Somali forces and Shabaab in Mogadishu. Shabaab leader Hassan Dahir Aweys denounced UN talks on Somalia that will take place in Kenya in mid-April.

Shabaab killed a soldier in an IED attack in Luq. Kenya is supporting the creation of a new seni-autonomous zone in southern Somalia; the Somali government is opposed to its creation.

Fifteen people were killed in fighting between Shabaab forces and Somali and African Union troops in Mogadishu. The African Union denied its troops took casualties during Shabaab mortar attacks in Mogadishu.

Shabaab repelled an assault by Somali and Kenyan forces on the town of Dhobley; 20 people were killed in the fighting. African Union forces killed a senior Shabaab commander. In Gedo, 25 Shabaab fighters surrendered to the pro-government Ahlu Sunnah Wal Jama’a.

Shabaab commander Sheikh Hassan Dahir Aweys proudly admitted to recruiting children to serve with the terror group. “We recruit underage children to fight for us, the children are ready to die for their country and religion,” he said. Shabaab sentenced a couple to 100 lashes for committing adultery.

Eighteen people were killed during fighting between Shabaab fighters and Somali and African Union forces in Mogadishu. Infighting between Somali troops in Mogadishu resulted in the death of one soldier. Puntland suspended Saracen International’s anti-piracy training program.

Ten people were killed after Shabaab launched an attack on the town of Bula Hawo on the Kenyan border. Shabaab took control of the village of Dif and arrested 10 merchants in Sadow and accused them of selling drugs. The African Union jailed three Ugandan soldiers for killing civilians.

Twenty more people were killed during shelling by both Shabaab and African Union forces in Mogadishu. The US said it was “disappointed” with the Transitional Federal Government for extending its mandate.
