The Muslim Youth Center, Shabaab’s affiliate in Kenya, said that the groups would fight “under the banner of AQEA (al Qaeda East Africa).” AQEA has long reported to al Qaeda’s most senior leadership.
The announcement formalizes the longstanding close working relationship between the two terror groups.
Shabaab and al Qaeda formally said the two groups have merged. Ayman al Zawahiri announced “the joining of the Shabaab al-Mujahideen Movement in Somalia to Qaedat al-Jihad, to support the jihadi unity against the Zio-Crusader campaign and their assistants amongst the treacherous agent rulers.”
The suicide attack took place at a hotel that is frequented by members of the Somali parliament.
Ahmed Hussein Mahamud, a Somali American, pled guilty to conspiring to provide money and recruiting personnel for Shabaab.
