The Saudi government has released 32 terrorists transferred by the US from the Guantanamo Bay detention facility. They were freed on bail after being questioned and undergoing rehabilitation sessions with clerics and other experts aimed at reintegrating them into Saudi society, according to Al Hayat. Twenty-four Saudi terrorists are still undergoing rehabilitation in the kingdom.

Saudi Arabia remains the world’s leading source for funds to al Qaeda and other terror groups, according to Stuart A. Levey, the Treasury’s lead counterterrorism official. “Saudi Arabia today remains the location where more money is going to terrorism, to Sunni terror groups and to the Taliban than any other place in the world.”

Saudi security forces arrested 56 al Qaeda operatives for plotting attacks inside the kingdom. The operatives were said to have received instructions from Ayman al Zawahiri, al Qaeda’s second in command, and were in the final stages of conducting attacks.

Security forces arrested 28 al Qaeda operatives for plotting to attack sites related to the annual hajj pilgrimage. The suspects were arrested in Mecca, Medina, and Riyadh and in an area near the country’s northern borders. Twenty-seven of the 28 suspects were Saudi citizens.

Saudi authorities stated they arrested over 200 members of al Qaeda cells during raids throughout the country over the past several months. The arrest of eight of the operatives “pre-empted an imminent attack on an oil installation.” Others arrested included foreign facilitators and members of support networks and a missile cell.

The Saudi government has released over 1,500 jailed al Qaeda operatives and supporters after they denounced Osama bin Laden’s call on his followers to “cleanse the Arabian Peninsula of polytheists.” Over 1,700 al Qaeda operatives still remain in Saudi custody.
