The military is planning on deploying troops to Kano as Boko Haram attacks rise. Police detonated two bombs in the city of Jos.

Seventeen “extremists” and one policemen were killed during fighting at police stations and a prison in Kano yesterday. Three Boko Haram fighters were also detained as police repelled the attacks.

Boko Haram fighters freed more than 40 prisoners after storming a jail in Yobe. An IED blast near a pub in Bauchi wounded nine people. President Goodluck Jonathan said the government is seeking “new tactics” to combat Boko Haram.

The Joint Military Task Force killed four Boko Haram fighters during a raid in Kano; a car bomb was also seized in the raid. A bomb was detonated outside of a nightclub in Abuja; no casualties were reported.

Habibu Bama, a Boko Haram member who masterminded the Christmas Day 2011 bombings in Abuja as well as other attacks, was arrested in Damaturu. The head of the Christian Association of Nigeria called the recent attacks on Christians “religious cleansing.”

The US has added Abubakar Shekau, the leader of Boko Haram, and Khalid al Barnawi and Abubakar Adam Kamba to its list of Specially Designated Global Terrorists. Both Barnawi and Kamba “have ties to Boko Haram and have close links to al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb.”

Police and military units deployed in force in Kaduna after a curfew was imposed in the city. The curfew was put in place after violence erupted in the wake of Boko Haram suicide attacks on churches on Sunday.

Boko Haram killed 48 people in yesterday’s suicide attacks on churches in Kaduna and Zaria. The terror group claimed credit for the attacks, calling them a “victory against Christian Churches in Kaduna and Zaria which led to the deaths of many Christians and security operatives.”

Boko Haram bombed five Christian churches in Kaduna; suicide bombers carried out at least three of the attacks. Twelve people were killed in the blasts.
