Suspected Boko Haram gunmen on motorbikes killed nine polio health workers in Kano. Some Muslim leaders in Kano claim the vaccination campaign is a plot against Muslim children.

Suspected Boko Haram fighters killed six park rangers and captured several more in an attack at the Sambisa game reserve. The attack was apparently in reprisal for a military assault on a Boko Haram camp last week.

Security forces killed 17 Boko Haram fighters during two raids on training camps in Borno state. One soldier was also killed in the fighting. The raids occur despite a supposed truce that is being observed by Boko Haram.

“Suspected Islamist gunmen” killed 18 people, including hunters, in Damboa. An Islamist group called Ansura claimed credit for an IED attack that killed two soldiers who were deploying to Mali.

The Islamist group Ansaru claimed an attack on a convoy of Nigerian troops in Kogi state, saying it was to stop African countries from joining the intervention against Islamists in Mali. Suspected Islamist gunmen killed four people in Kano state in an attack on the convoy of a senior Muslim leader.

Unconfirmed reports indicate that Boko Haram emir Abubakar Shekau was wounded in a gunbattle with the Joint Task Force and escaped to Mali. Two soldiers who were preparing to deploy to Mali were killed in an IED attack in Kogi.

Authorities arrested two men suspected of plotting a double suicide attack against a church at a military base in Kaduna in November 2012 in which 15 people were killed. Other suspects are also being questioned about the attack, which was blamed on Boko Haram.

Mohammed Zahinga, a wanted Boko Haram leader behind “most of the suicide attacks and bombings in Abuja, Kaduna, Kano, Jos and Potiskum” was arrested near Maiduguri. Zahinga, a.k.a. Mallam Abdullahi and Alhaji Musa, was plotting attacks against civilians and security personnel in the city,

Officials in the east-central state of Benue confirmed that Boko Haram has infiltrated the state and appealed to the federal government to deploy antiterrorism forces to Benue. In Kano state, police said they had recovered 1,123 improved explosive devices in the state in 2012 and had defused 68 such devices that year.

Suspected Boko Haram militants staged a brazen attack against the Nigerian Prison Service Farm Center in Maiduguri, freeing several jailed inmates. The previous day, Boko Haram militants and Nigerian state security forces clashed near Maiduguri and Marte, leaving at least seven killed.

Suspected Boko Haram militants killed a soldier, a policeman, an old woman, and her grandchild at the police and municipal headquarters in Song in Adamawa state; they also burned the buildings. Similar attacks took place last week in Maiha, Hong, and Fufore, also in Adamawa state, which borders Cameroon.

President Goodluck Jonathan claimed that most of the Boko Haram members involved in major attacks throughout the country in 2011 “have been arrested.” The attacks he mentioned included the suicide attack in the UN building and police headquarters in Abuja.

The army claimed it killed 13 Boko Haram militants in a gun battle in Maiduguri. One soldier also died in the clash, which erupted after the militants bombed army checkpoints.
