Boko Haram fighters murdered and then beheaded five people in Maiduguri. The military said it killed two Boko Haram fighters in the city and detained three more. President Goodluck Jonathan said the military is in Mali to protect Nigerian citizens.

Suspected Islamist gunmen killed four people in Kano state in an attack on the convoy of a senior Muslim leader.

Unconfirmed reports indicate that Boko Haram emir Abubakar Shekau was wounded in a gunbattle with the Joint Task Force and escaped to Mali. Two soldiers who were preparing to deploy to Mali were killed in an IED attack in Kogi.

Officials in the east-central state of Benue confirmed that Boko Haram has infiltrated the state and appealed to the federal government to deploy antiterrorism forces to Benue. In Kano state, police said they had recovered 1,123 improved explosive devices in the state in 2012 and had defused 68 such devices that year.
