Seyed Ramin Miraziz Paknejad, an Iranian suspected of running a human trafficking and fake passport syndicate, was arrested along with his wife over the weekend. Paknejad was detained in Thailand last year but jumped bail and fled to Malaysia; he is believed to have ties to terrorist groups, including those who planned bombings in Bangkok.

Malaysia declared the crisis in eastern Sabah to be “under control.” Authorities downgraded the alert level after a month of fighting against an incursion by the “Sulu royal army,” which had asserted a claim over Sabah.
A court indicted eight Filipinos over violence in Sabah between Malaysian troops and an armed group from the sultanate of Sulu; 100 others faced similar charges, and 72 were killed in the two weeks of fighting. Skirmishing continued between security forces and remnants of the group.
The Philippine Navy arrested 35 followers of the Sulu Sultanate fleeing Malaysia’s security operation in Sabah. The Malaysian military claimed that the leader of the group had fled Malaysia; the Moro National Liberation Front dismissed the claim.
