Day 9: Lebanese President Emile Lahoud vows that the demonstrations will not spark a sectarian war. Escalation is expected on Sunday. The Lebanese Army denied that PM Siniora had ordered confiscation of weapons transported to the resistance in southern Lebanon, as Nasrallah asserted yesterday. Beirut on edge as rumors of a planned Hezbollah-backed coup against PM Siniora sweeps the city and Hezbollah rallies thousands in front of the PM’s office demanding his resignation. Downtown businesses brace for extended closures as the rallies develop into a prolonged sit-in.

The UN will send a team to Lebanon to investigate the assassination of Minister Gemayel. Syria will not cooperate with the Hariri assassination tribunal. Gunmen also opened fire on Minster Pharaon’s office on the day of Gemayel’s murder.

Druze leader Walid Jumblatt blames Syria for the assassination of Christian minister Pierre Gemayel. Saad Hariri accused Syria of “trying to kill every free person” in Lebanon. The UN approved the tribunal to investigate the murder of Rafiq al-Hariri, the former Lebanese prime minister.

Christian Phalange Minister Pierre Gemayel, the son of former President Gemayel Amin, was assassinated in broad daylight in Beirut. The assassination occurs as the UN is preparing the Hariri assassination trial, UNIFIL seizes weapons from Hezbollah in the south, and Hezbollah calls for protests in an effort to topple the Lebanese government.

A Sunni called the Mujahideen in Lebanon threated Hezbollah for conspiring “to fully control Lebanon in alliance with Lebanon’s Crusaders and to eliminate the Sunni sect once and for all.” Hezbollah claims it will not continue talks but will conduct “peaceful protests.” The UN recommends the Hariri tribunal be held outside of Lebanon.
