A Kuwaiti criminal court acquitted eight members of an al Qaeda cell who were on trial for attempting to attack the US military base at Arifjan. Two of the men were being tried in absentia; one of them is on trial in Lebanon for al Qaeda links.

Security forces detained an undisclosed number of Kuwaitis and foreigners for spying for Iran. The detainees have gathered information on US and Kuwaiti military installations in Kuwait for the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps.

Security forces detained a man who said he was part of a new terrorist cell called the New Jihad Group. The group is purportedly backed by a prominent Saudi religious figure and sent 21 Bedouin men to fight in Afghanistan.

Kuwaiti security forces detained a man who is an al Qaeda recruiter in the Gulf states and a ‘go-between’ for al Qaeda in Iran and Afghanistan. The operative, who is being identified as MSAA, is a former Kuwaiti military officer. He had been watched for over two years.

Security forces detained a Saudi suspected of recruiting more than 20 Arabs to fight against Coalition forces in Afghanistan. The Saudi served as a noncommissioned officer in the Kuwaiti Army. One of his sons is in al Qaeda and another was killed fighting US troops in Afghansitan.
