NATO will end its mission to train the Iraqi military after the US withdraws from Iraq at the end of December. The US will sell Iraq an additional 18 F-16 fighters.

The US military transferred control of Al Asad Airbase in Anbar province over to the Iraqi military. The US now has just over 8,000 solider in country.

Twenty-two Iraqis were killed in a car bomb attack that targeted Shia pilgrims in Hillah. Most of those killed were women and children; more than 60 civilians were wounded.

Insurgents killed four policemen in Abu Ghraib. Two insurgents were killed in a premature detonation. Iraq is seeking help from Gulf countries to secure its airspace.

Prime Minister Maliki said that a bombing earlier this week inside Baghdad’s Green Zone was an assassination attempt against him. Maliki said the bomb had likely been assembled inside the Green Zone and was not very powerful.

Insurgents killed eight Iraqis in attacks in Taji and Sharqat. The government executed six terrorists. The US has transferred control of the Victory base complex to the Iraqi military.

Insurgents killed 10 Iraqis in a bombing in Khalis and eight more in shootings that targeted the families of former Awakening officials in Buhriz. An insurgent died in a premature detonation while planting an IED in Mosul.

Anbar’s provincial council said it would declare autonomy in the next week. Prime Minister Maliki said Iraq would accept US soldiers as military trainers. Insurgents killed a policeman in Mosul and five civilians in Samarra.

A suicide bomber slammed a car packed with explosives into the gate of al-Hout prison north of Baghdad, killing at least 19 people. In central Baghdad, an explosion in a car park at Iraq’s parliament killed at least one person and wounded several others, including a politician.

The US will spend more than $6 billion in Iraq in 2012 even though its forces are to withdraw from Iraq in late 2011, according to the US ambassador. Mahdi Army militiamen are joining the government’s security services under a secret deal between the government and the Sadrist movement.

Insurgents killed 15 Iraqis in bombings and attacks in Baghdad and Anbar provinces. The US Army said the Iran-backed Asaib al Haq is stepping up attacks to “to give the impression that our forces are being chased and forced to leave.”

Iraq executed 12 al Qaeda members who were convicted for the massacre of 70 people at a wedding. A string of bombings in Basra killed 19 people on Thursday evening and injured dozens more. Militants attacked a security checkpoint in Fallujah, killing one soldier and injuring three others.
