A senior security official pledged Iran’s full support for the Assad regime in Syria. US Defense Secretary Panetta said Iran’s Revolutionary Guards were exporting portable antiaircraft missiles. US Vice President Biden said the US was prepared to hold direct talks with Iran over its nuclear program.

Iran has told the UN nuclear agency it plans to upgrade the equipment at its Natanz plant, accelerating the production of enriched uranium. Iran’s oil exports rose as it circumvented economic sanctions.

A senior official said Iran would consider any attack on Syria as an attack on itself. The statement followed a similar comment in September 2012 when a military official said Iran would take action if the US attacked Syria.

UN inspectors and Iran failed to reach an agreement over inspection of a nuclear sites. The most important site is the Parchin military complex southeast of Tehran, where explosives testing for the nuclear weapons program is believed to have been carried out.

President Ahmadinejad said Iran needed to reduce its dependence on oil revenue to overcome economic sanctions. Iran’s state prosecutor said the two main opposition leaders were not competent to run for president in the June elections.
