Counterterrorism police killed seven militants in several raids against a new terrorist group that seeks to foment unrest between Muslims and Christians. The group operates out of Poso in Sulawesi province, and conducts terrorist training in the city.

Indonesia is beefing up security around Christian churches for the holiday period, to prevent terrorist attacks. A rights group said intrafaith and interfaith attacks and intimidation in the country rose by 24% in 2012.

Roki Aprisdianto, who was serving a six-year sentence for recruiting Islamic militants to attack churches and police stations in Java, escaped from prison in a burka. A female visitor wearing two burkas passed one to him.

Antiterrorism police conducted raids in the Poso district of Sulawesi island this week, killing two suspected militants and arresting three more. Last month two policemen investigating a terrorist training camp in the area were killed.

At least 3,000 Islamist protesters from the Prosperous Justice Party gathered outside the US Embassy in Jakarta, shouting “Allahu Akbar” and “America and Israel are terrorists!” Earlier in September, about 700 Islamists hurled petrol bombs and clashed with police outside the embassy.

The Detachment 88 antiterrorism unit arrested 10 Islamist militants in raids in Java and Borneo and seized a dozen bombs that the militants were planning to use in suicide attacks against the parliament and security forces. The militants recruited for terror attacks and ran a jihadist training camp.

In Jakarta, hundreds of protesters from the Islamic Society Forum clashed with police outside the US Embassy and hurled Molotov cocktails and tried to ignite a fire truck. Protests took also place in Medang and Badung. In Solo, protesters stormed KFC and McDonald’s restaurants, forcing them to close.

Six people, including three terrorists and three civilians, were wounded in an explosion at a bomb factory in Depok in the Jakarta suburbs. Two of the terrorists escaped.

The Detachment 88 antiterrorism force killed two Abu Sayyaf-linked militants during a shootout in Solo on Java and arrested another at a separate location. The militants had returned to Indonesia after two years of paramilitary training in the Philippines. One member of the elite police squad was killed in the shootout.
