Two Jemaah Islamiyah operatives captured earlier this year were planning to travel to Iraq to seek funding for operations in Indonesia, according to information that was on their laptop. Abu Husna and Agus Purwantoro, who were captured in Malaysia in March, planned to enter Iraq via Syria.

Police arrested nine members of Jemaah Islamiyah who were plotting to conduct terror attacks in Jakarta and on Sumatra Island. The men were associated with terror master Noordin Top. One of the men was a Singaporean who has met with Osama bin Laden. A cache of bombs packed with bullets was also seized.

Noordin Mohammad Top, a senior Jemaah Islamiah operative, is believed to have escaped a police dragnet and fled the country, according to Indonesian police. A recently arrested terrorist who was transferred to Indonesian custody said an Algerian helped him escape to a neighboring country.

Jemaah Islamiyah leaders Abu Dujana and Zarkasih were sentenced to 15 years in prison each after being found guilty of assisting terrorists and possessing, storing, and moving weapons destined for terror acts. Abu Dujana served as military commander while Zarkasih served as the group’s leader while Abu Bakar Bashir was in jail.

Abdul Rohim and Agus Purwanto, two Jemaah Islamiyah operatives arrested in Malaysia in January and recently extradited to Indonesia, “were planning to go to Syria to build a relationship with foreign radical groups” according to Indonesian police. Police also believe their arrest may provide clues that can lead to the arrest of Noordin Mohammad Top.
