Police detained four men thought to be behind the suicide bombings at the J.W. Marriott and Ritz Carlton hotels on July 17. One of the men recruits suicide bombers and the other served a jail sentence for hiding Noordin Mohammed Top. Police believe al Qaeda financed the attack.

Indonesian police said DNA tests prove that Noordin Mohammed Top, Southeast Asia’s most wanted terrorist, was not killed during the July 7 shootout at a farmhouse in Java. The person killed was a man named Ibrohim, who worked at the JW Marriott and Ritz-Carlton and aided in the July suicide attacks at the hotels.

Indonesian investigators have doubts that Noordin Mohammed Top was killed during a shootout with Detachment 88 in central Java. “He’s not yet dead, in fact DNA tests prove that the body that was recovered was not of Noordin Mohammed Top,” counterterrorism expert Rohan Gunaratna told Al Jazeera.

Noordin Mohammed Top, Southeast Asia’s most wanted terrorist, blew himself up after police surrounded and assaulted a farm house in central Java. Top was a senior Jemaah Islamiyah operative and the leader of the Tanzim Qaedat al-Jihad, which is linked to Jemaah Islamiyah and al Qaeda.

The former suspect claimed that he had been convinced by Noordin Mohammed Top to become a suicide bomber in the July 17 terrorist attack in Jakarta. The police stated that the suspect had lied about his involvement in the attack.
