Security forces dismantled an al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb cell in Algiers, arresting three. Two police and three civilians were wounded in an IED attack outside of Algiers.

Algerian troops killed 18 members of al Qaeda in the Islamic Mahgreb during two engagements to the east and west of the capital of Algiers. Eight were captured and an al Qaeda training camp destroyed. Three members of al Qaeda who were shown on a video were identified.

A suicide bomber in a truck packed with explosives killed 10 soldiers and wounded 35. The bomber attacked a military camp about 50 miles southeast of Algiers on the opening day of the Africa Games. Al Qaeda in the Islamic Mahgreb claimed responsibility for the strike.
