The Algerian security forces killed 15 al Qaeda in the Islamic Mahgreb fighters and captured seven during fighting over the past seven days. The fighting occurred on the Tunisian border and uncovered several hideouts and large weapons caches.

Security forces stopped an attack by al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb on three bases in Tizi Ouzou province east of Algiers. Three al Qaeda were killed and bomb factories were discovered. Security forces arrested 14 al Qaeda west of the capital.
Security forces killed Hareg Zoheir, aka Sofiane Abu Fasila, along with two operatives. Zoheir is believed to be the second-in-command of Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb and planned many of the suicide bombings in Algeria. Twenty-two al Qaeda operatives were killed near the cities of Biskra and Batna.
Eight soldiers and four terrorists were killed during fighting in eastern Algeria. The army killed a suicide bomber in the province of Tizi Ouzou earlier this week. The foreign minister said “foreign military bases on Algerian soil are not on the agenda.” French nationals are leaving Algeria after al Qaeda threats to attack foreigners.
Hassan Hattab, the founder of the Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat, the precursor to al Qaeda in the Islamic Mahgreb, surrendered to police with the hope of reconciling. Algerian soldiers killed 22 al Qaeda in the Islamic Mahgreb foot soldiers in two separate ambushes.

Algerians hold anti-terror protests after attacks
Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb claimed responsibility for the two suicide attacks in Algeria over the past week. The first attack targeted the Algerian president while the second attack targeted a coast guard barracks. At least 69 were killed and 154 were wounded in the suicide bombings.
A car bomb targeting a naval barracks in the coastal town of Dellys in eastern Algeria killed upwards of 16. This is the second major bombing in Algeria in three days, with an attempted suicide attack against Algeria’s president in Batna on September 6.
A suicide bomber struck in the town of Batna just prior to the arrival of President Abdelaziz Bouteflika. Fifteen were killed and 70 wounded in the attack. The suicide bomber detonated his vest after being detected by members of the crowd awaiting to see the president.
