A car bombing in the town of Thenia killed two and wounded 23. A police checkpoint was the target of the bombing and witnesses said this was a suicide attack.

Five soldiers were killed and 10 wounded during an ambush by al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb forces in the town of Ain Al Hamam in Tizi Ouzou province. Five more soldiers were wounded in an IED strike in the town of Ait Yahia, south of the city of Tizi Ouzou.

Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb took credit for a suicide bombing attack on a police station the town of Naciria. Over 1,100 pounds of explosives were used in the bombing which killed four and wounded over 20.

Algerian soldiers foiled an al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb plot to attack a security center at Ekern; soldiers are now searching for the 10-man cell. The Minister of the Interior said security forces have lapsed in their duty to prevent terror attacks, which resulted in the deadly Algiers bombings in early December.

French police detained five men associated with the Algerian-based al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb. The five were part of an eight-man cell consisting of six French nationals, an Algerian, and a Tunisian, and provided computer support for the terror group.

Security forces killed four al Qaeda fighters, captured two, and destroyed their camp during operations west of Algiers. A bomb hoax on a ferry traveling from France to Algeria forced the boat to return to port; no explosives were found.

Both of the Algiers suicide bombers were freed in a 2006 amnesty deal for Islamists. Seventeen UNHCR workers are among the 31 confirmed killed in Tuesday’s double suicide bombing.

Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb named Ibrahim Abu Uthman and Abdul Rahman Abu Abdul Nasser al A™assemi as the Algiers suicide bombers. Five members of the UNHCR staff in Algiers are still missing. One Chinese citizen was killed and seven wounded in the attacks.
