Security forces killed six “armed men” and detained 12 more during an operation in Tebessa in southern Algeria. Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula has strongholds in the area.

Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb kidnapped three aid workers, two Spaniards and an Italian, from a refugee camp near Tindouf. One of the Spanish hostages was wounded during the kidnapping.

Algerian security forces reportedly killed Adel Bourai, who served as the “treasurer” for al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb. Bourai was killed along with six other AQIM fighters during an operation in the Kabylia mountains near Boumerdes.

The US State Department warned of an al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb plot to shoot down airliners chartered by oil companies in the country. AQIM is believe to be in possession of Russian-made SAM-7 anti-aircraft missiles.

Eight people, including including 16 soldiers, were killed in a suicide attack on a military academy in the town of Cherchell. AQIM is thought to have carried out the attack.

Gunmen killed two traffic policemen in Bordj Bouararidj and stole their weapons; one other man was injured in the attack. Most of the increasingly numerous attacks in Algeria have been claimed by al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb.

Insurgents attacked a military checkpoint near the village of Taouarga in Bourmedes province, killing one soldier and injuring two more.

Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb claimed credit for the Aug. 14 suicide bombing at a police station in Tizi Ouzou that wounded more then 30 Algerians. AQIM claimed 35 “apostates” were killed.

A suicide bomber detonated his car bomb outside of a police station, wounding 29 people, including 11 policemen. The blast took place in Tizi-Ouzou, an area with a strong al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb presence.

Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb killed two Algerian soldiers in an IED attack in the Tissemsilt region. Abdelkahar Belhad confirmed that Abdelkahar Belhad was killed when he carried out the July 25 suicide attack.
