In a new statement, the Abdullah Azzam Brigades officially claimed the Aug. 22 rocket attack on Israel from Lebanon. The statement also denounced Hezbollah’s involvement in the ongoing Syrian civil war.
Overnight the IAF carried out a strike on a “terror site” located south of Beirut. The strike comes a day after four rockets were fired from Lebanon into Israel, in an attack claimed by the Abdullah Azzam Brigades.
An official from the Abdullah Azzam Brigades alleged on Twitter that fighters from the jihadist group were responsible for firing four rockets from Lebanon towards Israel. Israeli officials have said their “initial assessment” is that “global jihadists” were responsible.
Al Salafiyya al Jihadiyya denounced the Egyptian army for firing on protesters in the city of el Arish in North Sinai last Friday. In addition, a statement posted to jihadist forums announced the establishment of the Brigades of Abdullah Azzam in Egypt.
Online jihadists have once again taken up the cause of Saleh al Qarawi, who is detained inside Saudi Arabia. Al Qarawi previously headed the Abdullah Azzam Brigades and reportedly operated from inside Iran. Earlier this month, the Brigades threatened Iran over its role in the Syrian conflict.
The Abdullah Azzam Brigades is the latest jihadist group to release a statement regarding the deaths of Abu al Walid al Maqdisi and Ashraf al Sabah.
Al Qaeda Insinuating Its Way Into Syria’s Conflict
The group is named after a top al Qaeda leader and senior lieutenant to Osama bin Laden. A video released by the group implores Turkish jihadists to fight in Syria.
Al Qaeda in Iraq and other jihadist groups have been operating from within Syria for years, with the support of the Syrian government, and are now turning on their state sponsor.
The Abdullah Azzam Brigades said that Majid bin Muhammad al Majid, a Saudi citizen on the list of 85 most-wanted terrorists, is the emir of the Middle Eastern terror group.
Today’s designation takes place after the terror group’s emir and top bomb maker were added to the list of global terrorists late last year.
The terror group called the attack “a double special operation” as it targeted both Syrian security personnel and the Iranian Consulate.
The Abdullah Azzam Brigade claimed the attack and said it was carried out to avenge the death of Badr Mansoor, an al Qaeda and Taliban leader who was killed in a US drone strike on Feb. 9.
The al Qaeda-linked Abdullah Azzam Brigades had denied responsibility for the last two suicide attacks in Damascus on Dec. 23, 2011.
The terror group accused Syrian intelligence of staging the deadly Dec. 23 suicide attacks to hide the “failure of the regime of the tyrant in the Levant, Bashar al Assad, in subduing the rebels by force, murder, and exaggeration of crimes.”

Saleh al Qarawi, a top leader of the Lebanon-based terror group, fought with Abu Musab al Zarqawi in Fallujah. Qarawi was ordered by Zarqawi to form the terror group to conduct attacks in the Middle East.
Ibrahim Suleiman Hamad al Hablain is also on the Saudis’ list of 85-most-wanted terrorists.
