Malaysia deployed attack aircraft and ground troops in an attempt to dislodge some 200 Philippine militants from the “Sultanate of Sulu” who have resisted pleas from the Malaysian and Philippine governments to return home. The Philippine Islamist group MNLF warned of “war” if any Philippine civilians are killed in the operation.


Iraq

Al Qaeda in Iraq gunned down an Awakening leader and gravely wounded his sister in an attack at their home south of Mosul. Insurgents killed four Iraqis in Baghdad and five more in attacks in Kirkuk.

Police officers in the Sinai continued their strike to protest “inhumane” working conditions.


Palestinian Territories

UNRWA cancelled a marathon in the Gaza Strip after Hamas forbid women from partaking in the event. Malaysia announced plans to provide approximately $6.5 million in support of projects in the Gaza Strip. Prime Minister Fayyad and President Abbas are at odds over the recent resignation of Finance Minister Nabil Qassis.
