2nd Shabaab attack on Mogadishu’s Jazeera hotel

Three bombs exploded within an hour of each other near a Mogadishu hotel popular with diplomats and soldiers. Shabaab has claimed responsibility for the attack, in which at least 11 people have been killed and 17 or more were wounded.


Afghanistan

The Afghan Army cut a peace deal with the Taliban in the Sangin district in Helmand, and turned over several checkpoints to the jihadists. Three Taliban suicide bombers were killed in an assault on a NATO supply base at the Torkham crossing in Nangarhar.


Iraq

Iraqi troops in Anbar province repelled an armed assault from gunmen on the Syrian side of the border. The Islamic State of Iraq and the Sham killed three policemen in Abu Ghraib and nine civilians in Buhriz. Security forces killed two suicide bombers and captured an ISIS commander in Ramadi.



Boko Haram overruns Nigerian Air Force base

More than 20 security personnel and at least six civilians were killed as hundreds of Boko Haram fighters attacked the base on the outskirts of the provincial capital of Maiduguri.


Somalia

A combined force of Djiboutian and Somali troops has reportedly retreated to Beledweyne after meeting heavy Shabaab resistance in Luuq-Jeelow and Baar Village. If true, this would be the first significant setback since AMISOM and Somali troops renewed their offensive in the area.





Pakistani Taliban name interim emir, spokesman says

Asmatullah Shaheen Bhittani, a longtime military commander and the head of the Movement of the Taliban in Pakistan’s executive council, was appointed to serve as the temporary emir, a top spokesman said.





Ansar Jerusalem claims responsibility for car bombing in Ismailia

In a statement released to jihadist forums today, Ansar Jerusalem claimed responsibility for the recent car bombing near a military intelligence building in Ismailia. The attack follows previous warnings that it would continue to target locations tied to Egypt’s security apparatus.

Abdulkadir Mohamed Abdulkadir, a.ka. Ikrima, was associated with al Qaeda leaders Fazul Abdullah Mohammed and Saleh Ali Saleh Nabhan, and communicates with al Qaeda’s general command in Pakistan. Ikrima was not killed in the SEAL assault.


State Department designates longtime Zawahiri subordinate

The State Department designated Muhammad Jamal and the Muhammad Jamal Network (MJN) as terrorists. Jamal established connections to al Qaeda’s senior leadership, al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, and al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb.




Kenyan forces end Shabaab’s siege at mall

President Kenyatta said that five Shabaab fighters were killed and 11 more were captured. Sixty-two civilians and six Kenyan troops were killed during the attack on the Westgate Mall.






Videos show joint Al Nusrah, Free Syrian Army attacks in ancient village

According to the New York Times, videos posted online suggest “cooperation” between al Qaeda’s Al Nusrah Front, Ahrar al Sham, and a Free Syrian Army brigade in an assault on Malula earlier this week. Separately, Ahrar al Sham condemned the prospect of Western intervention in Syria.

Mohammed al Zawahiri was arrested in Egypt. He became a well-known figure in post-Mubarak Egypt and openly advocated al Qaeda’s ideology. He has numerous reported ties to terrorists and helped incite the Sept. 11, 2012 US Embassy protest in Cairo.
