Maliki said operations to root out the Mahdi Army fighters in Basrah and the South will continue as fresh troops are deployed to the areas of fighting. The Mahdi Army continues to take heavy casualties during engagements with US and Iraqi troops.
Muqtada al Sadr has called for his Mahdi Army to end fighting with the government. This comes as his forces have taken significant losses over the past six days.
The Mahdi Army has had 145 fighters killed, 81 wounded, 98 captured, and 30 surrendered throughout Iraq during the past 36 hours. Nasiriyah and Diwaniyah appear to be in government control and heavy fighting continues in Basrah, Baghdad, Karbala, and Babil provinces.
More than 200 Mahdi Army and Special Groups fighters have been reported killed during clashes in Baghdad, Basrah, Al Kut, Hillah, Nasiriyah, and Diwaniyah. The US military denied the Mahdi Army is in control of checkpoints in Baghdad.
The Iraqi security forces have launched Operation Knights’ Assault against the Mahdi Army and other Iranian-backed Shia militias in Basrah. Muqtada al Sadr’s unilateral cease-fire may fall apart as fighting breaks out in Bagdad and southern Iraq.
