Islamic terrorists beheaded three Somalian soldiers following a clash south of Mogadishu. The Somali transitional government announced that it would like to engage opposition groups in dialogue to help end the country’s 16-year civil war. Ongoing violence is forcing 20,000 civilians to flee Mogadishu each month.


Nigeria

A Nigerian Federal High Court in Abuja, granted bail to Mohammed Ashafa, charged by the Nigerian government for allegedly associating with an al Qaeda group and planning to harm American interests in Nigeria. Nigeria began training its first group of specialist anti-terrorism police.

Al Qaeda’s North Africa branch claimed it kidnapped the two Austrian nationals last seen on the Tunisian-Algerian border in late February. Algerian security forces are currently combing eastern villages in search of the pair. The Algerian newspaper, Ennahar, says the kidnappers moved the Austrians to Mali.

Afghanistan

The UN says violence in Afghanistan is at its highest point since the US-led invasion in Oct. 2001. Ten Taliban, including local commanders Mullah Sayed Rahim and Khan, have been killed since a security operation was launched last week in Oruzgan province. Insurgents attacked nine cell towers since last month.


Pakistan

Two massive suicide bombs ripped through the eastern city of Lahore, killing over 23 people and leaving close to 200 wounded. The seven-story Federal Investigation Agency building, which houses a department of the federal police’s anti-terrorism unit, was destroyed in the bigger blast. Six suspected insurgents were arrested in raids conducted in Tank and Swat.


Philippines

Police intelligence arrested Ronnie Tillung, alias Taming Yakana, a suspected member of the Abu Sayyaf who allegedly took part in the abduction of a physician in Isabela City, Basilan in 1992.


Israel

Israeli officials called a halt to airstrikes and raids into the Gaza Strip in response to a drop in rocket fire. The closure imposed on the West Bank following last Thursday’s shooting incident in Jerusalem was lifted on Sunday evening.

Chinese police captured and killed suspected Islamic terrorists who were plotting attacks targeting the Beijing Olympics. Police confiscated guns, homemade bombs, training materials, and extremist religious ideological materials during the raid, in which two members of the gang were killed and 15 arrested.
