Unidentified gunmen assassinated Haji Abalishov, chairman of the Dagestan Broadcasting Committee, in a walk-by shooting in Mahachgala. Another TV journalist from Dagestan was found stangeled to death in his Moscow apartment a few hours earlier. A bomb exploded on Friday at a police checkpoint in Ingushetia, bordering Chechnya, but no one was hurt.

Mali

Three Malian soldiers were killed and around 20 were captured by Tuareg insurgents who attacked a military supply convoy near the northeastern border with Algeria. The fighting took place in the northern area of Mali’s Kidal region where al Qaeda kidnappers are reported to be holding two Austrian tourists seized last month in Tunisia.

A son of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi is mediating over two Austrians held by al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb and is hopeful they will be freed soon. The Taliban released a video showing the suicide bombing of the Sabri district headquarters in Khost province that killed two US soldiers earlier this month. Maulvi Jalaluddin Haqqani, a top Taliban strategist and leader of the Haqqani Network, issued a message in the tape, praising the suicide attack.


Somalia

Islamic insurgents ambushed an Ethiopian unit while they tried to establish a new barracks in northern Mogadishu. The five-hour battle left at least three Ethiopian soldiers and three insurgents dead. Insurgents briefly overran two military bases following the clash.
