Indonesia

Mohammad Isa, a senior Al Qaeda operative, was captured by Indonesian authorities along with 10 other illegal immigrants from Afghanistan in northern Sumatra. Isa was posing as an asylum seeker with other immigrants to reach Australia. He is being held in an Australian-built detention center on Bintan island, near Singapore.


Nigeria

Imam Abubakar Shekau, the acting leader of Boko Haram, has issued an online statement praising Al Qaeda and offered condolences to Al Qaeda of Iraq’s loss of Abu Ayyub al Masri and Abu Omar al Baghdadi. “Do not think jihad is over,” Shekau said. “Rather jihad has just begun. O America, die with your fury.”


Thailand

Emergency rule has been extended until Oct. 19 in insurgency-plagued provinces of southern Thailand. The Pattani Malay Liberation Movement announced a ceasefire with hopes of achieving serious dialogue with the Thai government. Insurgents fired grenades at a company compound for defense volunteers in the Mayo district of Pattani.


Philippines

A 7-year-old boy was killed and five others injured in a bomb blast in Datu Piang in the province of Maguindanao. The bomb exploded 20 meters from the police station, resulting in civilian casualties only. Insurgents killed one soldier and wounded five others in an ambush.

A Tunis court has sentenced eight men up to 12 years in prison for belong to a terrorist cell. All of the men denied the charges of inciting terror and asserted that they were tortured to induce confessions. Two were convicted in absentia after they fled to Sweden and France and claimed asylum.

Police rescued a Chinese national being held by Abu Sayyaf fighters in Luuk in the province of Sulu. Wu, a Chinese immigrant shopkeeper held for two years in captivity, was freed after a 10-minute firefight that forced the Abu Sayyaf fighters to abandon the group’s last remaining foreign hostage.

Three gendarmes were killed in a remotely detonated IED attack at a checkpoint in Ziama-Mansouriah near Jijel in eastern Algeria. Two Algerian civilians were killed and two more were injured by a roadside bomb near Tebessa.

Islamic insurgents killed three Thai soldiers providing security to teachers in the Yaha district of Yala province. The three soldiers’ deaths came a day after five soldiers and civilians were killed in a bomb attack in Narathiwat province.

Insurgents killed five Thai soldiers in a roadside bomb attack and ambush while on night patrol in Narathiwat province. Insurgents opened fire on the soldiers after their vehicle had been struck and was overturned. Parliament is debating lowering wages for soldiers serving in the south.

The deputy leader of Boko Haram has released a 25-minute video interview with a journalist in his hideout. Imam Abubakar Shekau was the second in command to Mohammad Yusuf and is now thought to be hiding in Maiduguri. He has “assumed leadership to continue in the pursuit of religious knowledge.”

Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb ambushed and killed 11 Algerian police officers near the border with Mali. AQIM attacked the police convoy near Tinzaoutine (1,200 miles from Algiers) in Tamanrasset province, which hosts the Sahel regional joint anti-terror headquarters.


Philippines

Authorities arrested a key Abu Sayyaf suspect for a deadly bombing and firefight in April. Ajid Jalil, alias Ajid Jainul, was arrested after being discharged from the hospital and charged with several counts of murder. The government has convinced the Moro Islamic Liberation Front to drop its bid for independence in Mindanao.

A roadside bomb planted by Islamists has injured one civilian in Tala Mimoune, north of Tizi-Ouzou, where seven al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula terrorists were killed earlier this month. The bomb was suspected of targeting a military convoy traveling in Mizrana.

Moroccan authorities have dismantled a terror cell planning attacks in the country. The 11-member group was led by a Palestinian, who will appear in court in the capital, Rabat. The cell’s planned attacks and identify of it’s members remain unknown. The Interior ministry declared them Takfiri Jihadists.

Philippines

Authorities arrested a sub-commander of the Abu Sayyaf Group in Basilan who was wanted for kidnapping and illegal detention. A 72-year old Filipino of Swiss descent was rescued by Philippine troops in the outskirts of Zamboanga city after two months of captivity. The Abu Sayyaf Group is suspected of being behind the abduction.


Algeria

Algerian authorities dismantled a terror cell providing logistical support and new recruits to al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb. A number of men, between the ages of 22 and 35, belonged to AQIM’s El Huda brigade in the Kabylie region. Algerian security services released details on the terror watchlist database shared by Sahel-Sahara countries.
