Shadowy jihadist group poses grave threat to Egypt
The group, which has thus far limited its attacks to the Cairo area, has been described as “our brothers” by Ansar Jerusalem. Jihadists have increasingly promoted Ajnad Misr’s material in recent days.
Ansar Jerusalem claimed responsibility for a recent rocket attack on Eilat. The IDF said there was a dramatic increase in terror from the Gaza Strip in January. An Israeli cabinet minister said that if rocket fire from the Gaza Strip continues, Israel may invade and topple Hamas’ government.

Airstrikes in North Sinai appear to have increased in recent days after Ansar Jerusalem released video of its fighters downing an Egyptian military helicopter with a MANPADS.
The army said security forces foiled a pair of car bomb plots in North Sinai by Ansar Jerusalem, and that forces had killed seven terrorists, including one involved in the August 2012 attack in Rafah. The car of a senior prosecutor was blown up in the city of Minya.

Saudi national Adi Saleh Abdullah al Fudhayli al Hadhli, who died in June 2012 in an attack against Israel, had originally sought to join the “mujahideen” in Somalia. In 2011, he traveled to Libya to fight in the Libyan civil war.
In the message, Zawahiri mentions “muhajireen,” or foreign fighters, coming to the Sinai and needing the protection of locals. The presence of foreign fighters in the Sinai has long been speculated, but never conclusively proven to be a widespread phenomenon.

Ansar Jerusalem claimed responsibility for at least four additional attacks in North Sinai, but appeared to back off its original claims for attacks near the Talabiya police station and Behooth metro station in the Cairo area on Jan. 24.
