Iraq
A pair of al Qaeda in Iraq suicide bombers killed 16 people in an attack that targeted Turkmen in Tuz Khurmatu. Another suicide bomber killed 10 Iraqis in Mosul. Six more Iraqis were killed in attacks in Karbala. Security forces captured the head of an al Qaeda assassination cell in Mosul.
Taliban launch suicide assault on Presidential palace, CIA HQ in Kabul
The suicide assault team penetrated the perimeter at one of the most secured areas in Kabul and clashed with Afghan and US forces for nearly two hours before being defeated.
Afghanistan
The Taliban denied reports that it lowered its flag and removed the name “Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan” from its “political office” in Qatar. Five policemen defected to the Taliban in Zabul.
Iraq
Forty-two Iraqis were killed in a series of bombings and attacks in Baghdad and elsewhere in Iraq. Al Qaeda suicide bombers also conducted attacks in Tikrit and Mosul.
Somalia
A member of parliament was assassinated in Mogadishu. Shabaab attacked troops from Sierre Leone at their base in Taabto. The African Union has begun to train 100 Somali policemen.
Taliban insist on using ‘Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan,’ flying flag at Qatar ‘political office’
The spokesman for the Qatar “political office” denied reports the Taliban will lower their flag and remove the sign of the “Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan.”
Pakistan
The Taliban killed 10 foreign mountain climbers from the US, Ukraine, China, Slovakia, Lithuania, and Nepal, and a Pakistani guide in an attack at a base camp in Gilgit-Baltistan. The Taliban also killed a soldier in North Waziristan and a security official in Bannu.
Afghanistan
The Taliban killed seven policemen in Uruzgan, seven soldiers in Parwan, and two ISAF soldiers in the south. The Taliban denied that 46 of its fighters were killed in Parwan. The Taliban said it was given permission by the Qatari government to raise its flag at the “Political office of The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan.”
Iraq
Al Qaeda killed three policemen in a suicide assault in Hawija and eight other Iraqis in other attacks throughout the country. Two policemen and six al Qaeda fighters were killed in a clash in Al Khor in Anbar province on June 21.
Afghan Taliban balk at removing flag, official name from ‘political office’ in Qatar
The Taliban spokesman in Qatar said the group has been permitted by the Qatari government to raise the Taliban flag and use the name “Political office of The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan” to describe its de facto embassy.
Taliban’s shadow governor for Nuristan again reported killed in airstrike
The governors of Kunar and Nuristan provinces in Afghanistan claimed that Sheikh Dost Mohammed was killed in a US drone strike. Dost Mohammed’s death is unconfirmed, and Afghan officials have claimed he was killed one other time already this year.
Afghanistan
Fifteen Taliban fighters and six Afghan soldiers were killed in clashes throughout the country. The Taliban killed an Australian soldier in Uruzgan. “Gunmen” killed four tribal leaders in Faryab.
Iraq
A suicide bomber killed 12 people in an attack at a mosque near Taji. Four more Iraqis were killed in a suicide attack in Azba. Twenty-two Iraqis were killed in other attacks by al Qaeda throughout the country. The government allocated $129 million to fund the Awakening.
Somalia
Shabaab claimed it killed five “invaders from Sierra Leon” during an ambush on a convoy near Dhobley. Shabaab also claimed it killed five “apostates” in an attack on a base outside of Baidoa. The reports have not been confirmed.
Suicide assault team strikes inside Shia mosque in Peshawar
Three members of a suicide assault team killed security guards at the mosque, allowing one of the bombers to detonate his vest as Shia worshipers were offering Friday prayers.
Iraq
An al Qaeda suicide bomber killed seven people in an attack at a vote counting center in Ramadi. Al Qaeda killed three people in an IED attack in Sharqat. Security forces captured two al Qaeda fighters at the Al Waleed crossing point with Syria.
Taliban want release of 5 al Qaeda-linked commanders in exchange for captured US soldier
The Taliban are using their office in Qatar to further their political standing in the international community as well as negotiate the release of al Qaeda-linked leaders.
Iraq
A suicide bomber killed a political leader in Ninewa province and four of his family members in an attack at a gathering at the politician’s home. A counterterrorism officer was killed in an IED attack in Karma.
Yemen
A suicide bomber killed two people in a blast at a market int he northern city of Saada. The US military is rumored to have deployed 1,700 troops to Yemen, including Marines to protect the embassy in Sana’a.
Shabaab suicide assault team storms UN compound in Mogadishu
Eight fighters from al Qaeda’s affiliate in Somalia penetrated security at a United Nations Development Program compound, killing several UN employees.
Pakistan
A suicide bomber killed 35 civilians, in an attack at a funeral procession in Mardan. Among those killed was a member of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa’s provincial assembly. An Army lieutenant colonel died of wounds suffered in an IED attack in North Waziristan on June 9.
Afghanistan
The Afghan military has officially taken control of all combat operations in the country. The Taliban opened a political office in Qatar. Four US soldiers were killed in a rocket attack at Bagram Airbase. Three people were killed in a bombing that targeted a senior political leader in Kabul.
Iraq
A suicide bomber killed 15 Iraqis in an attack on a Shia mosque in Baghdad. Insurgents killed two policemen in an IED attack in Ninewa. Security forces killed an al Qaeda leader in Baghdad. Police seized a truckload of explosives bound for the Egyptian Sinai.
Afghanistan
Afghan special forces killed five Taliban fighters in Farah. The NDS arrested two Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan suicide bombers and three operatives in Kunduz. Six Afghan Local Policemen in Badghis defected to the Taliban.
Iraq
Al Qaeda in Iraq killed 15 Iraqis in attacks across the country; in Fallujah, three Iraqi policemen were killed in a suicide bombing. Al Qaeda also assassinated a senior Sunni cleric in Ramadi. The Mukhtar Army claimed it attacked the Mujahedeen-e-Khalq.
ISAF captures al Qaeda trainer in Kunar
The al Qaeda leader was targeted in a raid in the Watahpur district, a known hub for the terror group, on June 6.
Afghanistan
Security forces killed 15 “rebels” in Logar. The Taliban killed five policemen in an IED attack yesterday in Paktika. Six civilians were killed in an IED attack in Uruzgan.
Iraq
At least 51 Iraqis were killed in a wave of attacks throughout Iraq. One of the attacks was a suicide bombing in Baghdad. More than 1,000 Kurdish soldiers from the Iraqi Army’s 16th Brigade defected to the Peshmerga after refusing to defend the Sunni Arab town of Sulaiman Bek.
