Seventeen people were killed as Shia Houthis and Sunni Salafists clashed in the northern province of Amran. Thirteen people, including a colonel and five soldiers, were killed as the military battled with tribesmen who were halting repairs on the country’s main oil pipeline.

The Taliban killed six people in a bombing at a market in Logar. Police killed four Taliban fighters while repelling a complex assault in Ghazni. Security forces captured a would-be suicide bomber and an associate during a raid in Nangarhar.


2nd Shabaab attack on Mogadishu’s Jazeera hotel

Three bombs exploded within an hour of each other near a Mogadishu hotel popular with diplomats and soldiers. Shabaab has claimed responsibility for the attack, in which at least 11 people have been killed and 17 or more were wounded.

Yemen

Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula gunned down a colonel in the intelligence branch outside of his home in Aden. AQAP claimed credit for the Dec. 31, 2013 suicide assault on a security headquarters in Aden, and vowed to continue attacking the military.



Pakistan

A suicide bomber killed three people and wounded 30 more in an attack on a bus in Quetta. The suicide bomber rammed his vehicle into a bus that was transporting Shia travelers from Iran.


Iraq

“Islamist militants” attacked police stations and government buildings in Fallujah, Ramadi, and Tarmiyah to free prisoners and seize weapons. Fighters are in control of areas of Ramadi and Fallujah. In Tarmiyah, four policemen were killed after jihadists assaulted a police headquarters in the city.


Somalia

Six people were killed during a Shabaab suicide assault on the Jazeera hotel in Mogadishu. Shabaab detonated two car bombs outside the hotel, then two suicide bombers were gunned down before entering the hotel complex.


Indonesia

Counterterrorist forces from Detachment 88 killed six “Islamist militants” and detained one more during a raid on New Years Eve in Ciputat on the outskirts of Jakarta. The jihadists are suspected of plotting to attack the Myanmar Embassy and a Buddhist temple.



Iraq

Twenty-three Iraqis were killed in violence throughout Iraq over the past 24 hours. Forty Sunni members of parliament resigned in protest after a senior lawmaker was detained in Ramadi. Prime Minister Maliki said he would turn security in Anbar over to the police.

An al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula suicide assault team attacked a headquarters in Aden; three soldiers were killed while repelling the attack. An AQAP terrorist involved in a 2011 suicide assault in Yemen was given the death sentence.

“Gunmen” thought to be from the Southern Separatist Movement killed 10 soldiers and overran a military outpost in Lahj. Officials are reportedly questioning senior generals over possible involvement in al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula’s suicide assault on the Ministry of Defense in Sana’a in early December.





Iraq

The Islamic State of Iraq and the Sham killed 18 people in a series of bombings and attacks. In Mosul, a suicide bomber killed eight soldiers, including a brigadier general. Four more soldiers were killed in Garma and four Awakening fighters were killed in Baghdad.


Yemen

A court sentenced nine al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula fighters to jail terms ranging between two to 10 years in prison. The AQAP fighters were convicted of plotting to assassinate President Hadi by detonating an IED as he traveled to his presidential palace.

Afghanistan

Police killed 13 Taliban fighters during operations in Nangarhar, Laghman, Logar and Helmand. The Taliban killed an Afghan soldier in an IED attack. The Interior Minister disputed a British report that the Taliban would retake areas of Afghanistan after ISAF forces withdraw.
