Pakistan

The Pakistani military has claimed it killed more than 170 “terrorists” in a series of “precise strikes” in North Waziristan. The military claims no civilians were killed, and said most of those killed were “Uzbeks” or members of the Turkistan Islamic Party.


Afghanistan

The Taliban killed two poll workers and a policeman in an attack on a convoy that was transporting ballots in Helmand, and five members of a family in an IED attack in Kandahar. The United Nations said that al Qaeda and allied groups remain a major threat to Afghanistan and the wider region.


Iraq

The Islamic State of Iraq and the Sham took control of Tal Afar in northwestern Iraq. The military claimed it killed 20 ISIS fighters in airstrikes in Balad and an ISIS commander from Algeria and four aides in Fallujah. The military also claimed it retook Jurf al Sakhar and killed 28 ISIS fighters.



Afghanistan

The defense minister claimed that 146 Taliban fighters, 39 civilians, and 18 soldiers were killed during election day violence. A Taliban suicide assault team killed three policemen in an attack in Kandahar; seven members of the Taliban team were killed in the attack. The Taliban killed 11 civilians in an IED attack in Samangan.


Iraq

The Islamic State of Iraq and the Sham’s Salahaddin Division released photographs of the execution of scores soldiers captured at Tasfirat prison in the city of Tikrit. Yemen

Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula killed eight people while opening fire on a bus that was transporting medical personnel. Troops from the Presidential Guards surrounded a mosque in Sana’a that is run by former President Saleh after rumors of coup swirled in the capital.





Yemen

US drones killed an al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula commander and four fighters in a strike in the southern province of Shabwa. The Yemeni military also killed four AQAP fighters during a raid in Shabwa. Yemeni forces also destroyed weapons, vehicles, and warehouses during the raid.




Pakistan

The US ended its self-imposed, six-month-long moratorium on drone strikes in Pakistan when it launched two attacks on June 11-12 in North Waziristan. A senior Haqqani Network commander and two top Afghan Taliban leaders are reported to have been killed in the strikes.


Afghanistan

A Taliban suicide bomber killed three Afghan Local Police officers in Ghazni. The Taliban killed seven civilians in an IED attack in Faryab. The US is secretly transferring some of the non-Afghan prisoners held at Bagram to their home countries.


Iraq

Iraqi troops stopped the Islamic State of Iraq and the Sham on the outskirts of Samarra, the city that hosts the Al Askaria mosque. The ISIS took control of the towns of Dhuluiyah, Saadiyah, and Jalula to the west of Samarra. ISIS fighters also attacked Taji and other towns south of Samarra.

Iraq

The Islamic State of Iraq and the Sham took control of the cities of Tikrit and Bayji in Salahaddin province. Bayji has Iraq’s largest oil refinery, and Tikrit is the provincial capital of Salahaddin. ISIS fighters have freed thousands of prisoners and looted hundreds of millions of dollars during their offensive.





Afghanistan

Five US special operations soldiers and an Afghan soldier were killed during fighting in Zabul; they are thought to have been killed in an accidental airstrike by ISAF attack aircraft. Security officials said that the Taliban killed three soldiers in IED attacks, and 13 Taliban fighters died in premature detonations in Sar-i-Pul and Helmand. Security officials also accused the Lashkar-e-Taiba of launching the suicide attack that targeted presidential candidate Dr. Abdullah.
