The Islamic State took control of several towns outside of Mosul, including Qaraqosh, Tal Kayf, Bartella, and Karamlesh after Kurdish forces retreated. The US is considering launching airstrikes against the Islamic State or dropping supplies to refugees fleeing the fighting. President Obama was clear that the military could launch airstrikes only under specific conditions, and that the US military would not act as an offensive air force for the Iraqi military or the Kurdish Peshmerga.
The Yemeni military said it killed 25 al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula fighters over the pst two days while battling to protect the city of Seyoun in Hadramout province. Yesterday, AQAP fighters killed five soldiers in an ambush in Habban in Shabwa province.
