A gas pipeline was bombed in Shabwa province, a known al Qaeda haven. Yemen will begin the trial of four al Qaeda operatives next week; a German is among the four. The US may file terrorism charges against al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula leader Anwar al Awlaki.

A US Predator strike in the Datta Khel area of North Waziristan killed six “militants” on Sept. 12. Four people were killed in an IED attack in Kurram. A policeman and a civilian were wounded in a bombing at a Christian church in Mardan.





Afghanistan

Coalition airstrikes killed 14 Taliban fighters in Uruzgan. Police killed two Taliban fighters in Baghlan. Afghan and Coalition forces detained Taliban and Haqqani Network commanders and fighters in Kandahar, Khost, and Paktika.


Somalia

Ten people were killed in clashes between Puntland security forces and Shabaab forces under the command of Mohammed Said Atom in the Galgala region. Shabaab and Hizbul Islam’s top leaders called for more attacks against African Union forces. Hizbul Islam forces destroyed homes and graves in the town of Lafole.


Australia

The trial of five Australian Muslim men who were plotting to carry out an assault on a Sydney army base has begun. The five men sought a fatwa, or religious decree, from an imam in Somalia to carry out the attacks.


Yemen

A Yemen security official claimed al Qaeda has been defeated in Lauder in Abyan province and said security forces “are achieving remarkable success” against the terror group. The foreign minister described claims of direct US military action in Yemen as “inaccurate media leaks.”


Kashmir

A suicide bomber killed only himself in a premature detonation in Pakistani-held Kashmir. Indian troops imposed a curfew in Srinagar after rioting led to the torching of government and police buildings in the city.

Three policemen and three al Qaeda in Iraq fighters were killed during a clash in the Al Hudayyeb area in Diyala province. Insurgents killed a policeman and a civilian in bombings in Baqubah and Buhriz.


Somalia

Five soldiers were killed in an IED attack in Mogadishu. Shabaab spokesman Sheikh Ali Mohammed Rage said that Shabaab’s Ramadan offensive has been successful. The spokesman for Ahlu Sunnah Waljama™a claimed his group has intelligence about Shabaab attacks in government-controlled areas.


Iran

A senior Iranian diplomat in Finland resigned and joined the opposition. Tehran will release a female American hiker from jail if a $500,000 bail is posted. Police detained several suspects in the July bombing of the Zahedan Grand Mosque. Iran claimed that supplies of foreign gasoline have increased despite sanctions.


Russia

Security forces killed eight “militants” in Dagestan after they refused to surrender. Terrorists assassianted the chief of the anti-extremism department in a shooting in Makhachkala in Dagestan. On Sept. 10, terrorists killed two policemen in Dagestan and Ingushetia.

Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, the notorious jihadi commander of his own faction of Hizb-i-Islami and an ally of the Taliban and al Qaeda, stated the obvious on Saturday: that al Qaeda carried out the Sept. 11 attacks on the United States. Tajikistan

Tajik border guards killed 20 Taliban and Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan fighters as they attempted to cross the border from Afghanistan. The Taliban and IMU fighters are thought to have been fleeing an ISAF and Afghan operation in Kunduz.


Afghanistan

Coalition and Afghan forces killed and captured several Taliban and Haqqani Network commanders and fighters in Kandahar, Helmand, Zabul, Khost, Logar, Paktia, and Nangarhar. The Taliban killed a mother and father of six in an IED attack in Kandahar. A British soldier died of wounds sustained in an attack more than two weeks ago.


Iraq

Wikileaks reportedly will release nearly 300,000 classified military documents relating to the Iraq War. Wikileaks, with the help of other news agencies, is said to be scrubbing the documents to ensure sensitive information that puts people’s lives at risk does not occur, as it did with the leakage of Afghanistan documents.


Somalia

Somali troops defeated a Shabaab suicide attack at the seaport in Mogadishu. A suicide bomber hijacked a fuel truck and entered the seaport, but failed to detonate his bomb.


Iran

The chief of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran said the Bushehr nuclear reactor would go online in the next month. Bahrain’s interior minister said Iran had no links to recently arrested “spy cells.” Tehran canceled the release of a female American hiker accused of spying.
