Iraq

Palestinian and foreign “Arab” fighters belonging to al Qaeda in Iraq were fighting in the Hadeed region in Diyala. Security forces detained 11 wanted men in Kirkuk and seized 123 roadside bombs in Mosul.


Pakistan

Security forces killed 44 “rebels” in Khyber and four Taliban fighters in Bajaur. Ten Taliban fighters and three paramilitary troops were killed in Peshawar. An Anti-Terrorist Court refused bail for three men accused of aiding the Times Square plot in New York City.



Afghanistan

US troops killed 27 Haqqani Network fighters as they attempted to attack a base in Khost. Security forces killed and captured scores of Taliban and Haqqani Network commanders and fighters in Kandahar, Helmand, Ghazni, and Khost. The Taliban killed two civilians in an IED attack in Nimroz and an ISAF soldier in the south.



The Taliban

Mullah Shamsullah, Mullah Nazir’s second in command and spokesman for the Wazir Taliban in South Waziristan, is thought to have been killed in a Sept. 21 Predator strike in Azam Warsak. Shamsullah’s death has not been confirmed.



Al Qaeda

Bekkay Harrach, a German national who is a senior member of al Qaeda’s external operations branch may have been killed in a US Predator strike in August that targeted a Haqqani Network compound. Harrach’s death has not been confirmed.


Russia

Doku Umarov, the emir of the Caucasus Emirate, relieved four Chechen field commanders of their leadership positions for their actions in attempting to pressure Umarov to step down in early August. The four commanders are Aslambek Vadalov, Tarkhan Gaziyev, Khusein Gakayev, and Arab Mukhannad.



Pakistan

The US launched two Predator strikes in South Waziristan; 26 Taliban, including Mullah Nazir’s deputy, were reported killed. The military killed eight “militants” in Kurram. Two Frontier Corps troops were killed in an IED attack in Khyber.


US strike kills 16 in South Waziristan

The strike is the first that hit in an area under the control of “good Taliban” leader Mullah Nazir since July 25. Nazir’s aide is rumored to have been killed in the strike.


Iraq

Insurgents killed two policemen in Kirkuk and a government official in Tarmiyah. Security forces detained 13 al Qaeda operatives near Karbala and a senior leader in Mosul, and five wanted men near Kirkuk.


Afghanistan

Nine ISAF soldiers died in a helicopter crash in Zabul. Security forces killed and captured scores of Taliban and Haqqani Network commanders and fighters in Kandahar, Zabul, Helmand, Khost, Nangarhar, Baghlan, and Kunduz. The Taliban killed six construction workers in Parwan and an Afghan soldier in Herat.


Somalia

Prime Minister Sharmake resigned after a long-running feud with President Sharif. Ten people were killed in fighting in Mogadishu. Puntland police arrested the imam of the Salahudiin Mosque and another person in Galkayo for propagating “terrorist ideology.”


United States

The FBI arrested Sami Samir Hassoun and charged him with attempting to plant a bomb near Chicago’s Wrigley Field. Hassoun, a Lebanese citizen, was unknowingly working with undercover FBI agents to plot attacks, and discussed other plots with federal agents.


Tajikistan

The defense ministry said that 25 soldiers were killed in the Sept. 19 ambush of a military convoy int eh Rasht Valley, and denied reports that 25 soldiers were missing. The opposition Islamic Revival Party of Tajikistan denounced the attack.


Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula

Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula claimed it kidnapped a a senior intelligence official in Saada in August, and demands a prisoner exchange for two of its imprisoned leaders. France

Security forces are on full alert in Paris after receiving credible threats of a female suicide bomber planning to attack in the city’s transport system. Also, the rector of the Grand Mosque of Paris has been given bodyguards after he received “real threats.”


Pakistan

US Predators killed four “militants” in North Waziristan. Nine Pakistanis were killed in ethnic violence in Karachi. Security forces killed eight “militants” and arrested a British national in Khyber. The Taliban attacked two NATO fuel tankers in Baluchistan.


Iraq

Insurgents killed two policemen in attacks in Baghdad and Mosul. Security forces detained 42 wanted men in Mosul and Basrah, and two al Qaeda leaders and four fighters in Fallujah and Balad Ruz.


Somalia

A suicide bomber entered the compound of the Presidential Palace in Mogadishu and detonated his vest after being shot by African Union troops; no casualties were reported. Shabaab and Hizbul Islam took over the Horn Afrik and GBC radio stations in Mogadishu.

Afghanistan

Security forces killed and captured several Taliban and Haqqani Network commanders and fighters in Kandahar, Helmand, Ghazni, Kunduz, Khost, Paktia, and Logar. A suicide bomber killed only himself in Jalalabad. The Taliban killed an ISAF soldier in the south.


Lebanon

Hisham Awad, the son of slain Fatah al Islam chief Abdulrahman Awad, was among three Lebanese members of Fatah al Islam who were recently killed in Iraq. The other two fighters were identified as Shadi Makkawi and Khaled Afandi.


Jordan

Security forces reportedly arrested Sheikh Abu Mohammed al Maqdisi, the cleric who was Abu Musab al Zarqawi’s mentor. Two al Qaeda-linked operatives were charged in a plot to kill foreign soldiers based in Jordan.


Tajikistan

Tajikistan’s defense ministry said foreign terrorists were involved in the ambush in the Rasht Valley that killed upwards of 40 soldiers. “In addition to Tajik citizens, the terrorist group also contained militants and mercenaries including citizens of Pakistan, Afghanistan and Chechnya in Russia,” a spokesman said.


Egypt

Security forces reportedly detained Mohammed Dababish, a senior intelligence operative for Hamas in the Gaza Strip. Dababish was involved in the murder of an Egyptian border guard as well as smuggling and other activities.


Yemen

More than 8,000 Yemenis fled the town of Huta in Shabwa province as security forces launched an assault against an estimated 100 al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula fighters. Three al Qaeda fighters were reported killed in Shabwa yesterday. President Obama’s counterterrorism adviser is visiting Yemen.
