Pakistan

Pakistan reopened the Khyber Pass to NATO traffic. The government is considering taxing NATO supplies crossing the border. Security forces killed five Taliban fighters in Swat and five “militants” in Khyber.


Afghanistan

The Taliban killed four Italian troops in an IED attack in Farah. A female British aid worker was killed during a rescue attempt in Kunar. Combined forces killed and captured several Taliban members in Kandahar, Zabul, and Logar. A Taliban fighter died in a premature detonation in Uruzgan.


Iraq

Insurgents killed four civilians in attacks in Baghdad and Fallujah. An Awakening leader survived an assassination attempt in Fallujah. Security forces detained 15 wanted men during raids in Basrah.


Yemen

Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula fighters gunned down an intelligence official in in Foha in Hadramat province. Saleh al Shaoush, an al Qaeda operative detained in January, admitted in court he planned to carry out a suicide attack.


Iran

The finance minister said Iran has grown stronger due to UN sanctions. Hezbollah said Iran helped rebuild Lebanon “modestly” after the terror group’s 2006 war with Israel. Police killed two “terrorists” involved in the recent killing of four policemen and a civilian.


Shabaab denies rift between top leaders, pledges allegiance to Osama bin Laden

Pakistan

US Predators killed nine terrorists, including several foreigners, in strikes in North Waziristan. The Taliban destroyed 27 NATO fuel tankers in Mithri. The government said it would likely reopen the Khyber Pass to NATO traffic on Oct. 9. An explosion destroyed a mosque in Khyber.


Somalia

Sheikh Mukhtar Robow Abu Mansour, Shabaab’s deputy leader, denied there was a dispute between him and Shabaab’s top leader, Sheikh Mukhtar Abu Zubeyr. Robow also declared that Osama bin Laden was “our leader.”



Afghanistan

The Taliban killed the governor of Kunduz and 14 others in a bombing at a mosque in Takhar. Combined forces also killed and captured several Taliban members in Kandahar, Helmand, Zabul, Khost, Logar, and Wardak. The Taliban killed a British soldier and two ISAF soldiers in the south, and a tribal elder in Farah.


Al Qaeda

US Predators killed Mohammed Usman, a senior aide to Osama bin Laden and the ‘spymaster” for Ilyas Kashmiri’s Brigade 313. Usman had nearly two decades of experience in jihad in Afghanistan and Pakistan, and helped unite various Pakistani terror groups.


Yemen

The provincial governor of Shabwa said there is no indication that Anwar al Awlaki has ties to al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula. The Interior minister said there is no evidence linking a security guard that killed a French worker to al Qaeda.




Pakistan

The Pakistani Taliban killed eight people in a double suicide attack at a Sufi shrine in Karachi. US Predators killed four “militants” in North Waziristan; the foreign ministry said the strikes violate Pakistan’s sovereignty. The Taliban killed two troops in Mohmand. Afghanistan

Security forces killed the Taliban’s shadow governor for Badghis and a top military commander. Combined forces also killed and captured several Taliban members in Kandahar and Takhar. A Taliban suicide bomber killed a German soldier in Baghlan.


Iraq

Insurgents killed an Awakening fighter and four civilians in attacks in Babil, Baghdad, and Mosul. Security forces detained six wanted men in Basrah and two more in Kirkuk.


Somalia

Hizbul Islam met with Sheikh Robow, a former Shabaab leader who quit the group, to discuss a merger. Uganda is willing to deploy 20,000 troops to Somalia; South Africa will not send troops. AMISOM denied reports that soldiers are missing. Shabaab forces withdrew from Beledweyne as Ethiopian forces entered the region.


Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula

Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula operatives threatened a terrorism judge and the jury during their trial. “You will meet the same fate as those who plotted against the jihadists,” one AQAP operative told the judge.


Yemen

Security forces arrested seven Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula suspects in the attack on the deputy British ambassador’s convoy in Sana’a. AQAP claimed it attempted to shoot down a Saudi prince’s plane over Sana’a last year. The US issued a travel warning for its citizens.


Tajikistan

Six Tajik soldiers were killed in a mine attack during military operations against Islamist forces in the Rasht Valley. The Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan claimed credit for the attack. The attack took place in the same region where 28 soldiers were said to have been killed in a helicopter crash on Oct. 6.
